We have two registered nurses on staff, and Deerwood campers and alumni rave about our wonderful chefs and terrific food! Since the camp was founded in 1945, the staff has been led by members of the Thomsen family. Ferris and Helen Thomsen started it all and directed the camp through the 1940s, 50s and 60s. Their two sons, Tommy and Len led the way in the 1970s, 80s and 90s, and now Deerwood is directed by the third generation of Thomsens. |

What makes the Deerwood staff most unique is its core of 12 to 14 senior counselors who return year after year, lending maturity, experience and continuity to the program. Most of the staff in this group are teachers and work and live at camp each summer with their spouses and children, giving Deerwood a true family feel. |
About 23 college-aged counselors and 10 junior counselors (approx. 17 years old) complete the counseling staff. A very high percentage of our staff spent several summers as Deerwood campers in their younger days.

Many staff hold qualifications unique to their activity and all counselors are trained each year in first aid and CPR. All lifeguards at the waterfront are certified by the American Red Cross. | top | |
