| Biff Sutcliffe – 44 years at Deerwood . Without Biff, camp couldn't run. He is the handyman extraordinaire, caretaker of the physical plant, and can fix anything from boats to band-saws, docks to drinking fountains. After retiring from teaching and coaching at the Tilton School , Biff and his wife, Jannine, moved to their Deerwood home year-round. | ![]() |
| Jannine Sutcliffe – 40 years at Deerwood . Jannine worked as our everyday nurse for almost 25 years. Now she heads our nursing staff, trains counselors in CPR and first aid, and is always on call when needed for a consult. Jannine and Biff live at Deerwood year-round. | ![]() |
| Tim Thomsen – 35 years at Deerwood . Tim “founded” our mountain-biking and sail-boarding programs and now leads the way for both those activities. During the school year, Tim teaches fourth grade in the Upton-Mendon school district in Massachusetts , and in 2005 coached the first ever high school lacrosse team there. | ![]() |
| Jeff Barclay – 33 years at Deerwood . After assisting Dave Mercer and Bob Smith at the waterfront for more than fifteen years, “Barx” took over the reigns as waterfront director in 2005. He teaches, coaches and serves as athletic director at the Maple Street School in Manchester , VT. | ![]() |
| Shawn Pistor – 30 years at Deerwood . “Mako” can do and has done just about everything at camp. He now serves as one of our waterfront directors along with Jeff Barclay. Shawn is a certified instructor of lifeguards and has trained many of our younger staff. Shawn coaches men's and women's crew at Rollins College . | ![]() |
Clarence Williams – 30 years at Deerwood . Clarence is the head chef who has treated the campers and staff to amazing meals for three decades! During the school year, Clarence works as a chef for the Holderness School and catches hundreds of fish in Squam and Winnipesaukee. |

| Jeff Thomsen – 29 years at Deerwood . Jeff is the guy that takes all the great photos that parents and campers love at the final slideshows. When he is not touring camp, he helps coordinate activities and events as a head counselor. In the winter, Jeff is a Physical Education teacher and coach at Providence Day School in Charlotte, North Carolina. | |
| Rob Hudson – 24 years at Deerwood . “Rock” started the Deerwood Forge in 1972 and returned in 2000 to be our lead blacksmith each year. He lives in Rock Hall , MD where he teaches blacksmithing and creates masterpieces. He is an internationally recognized “Master Smith” and some publications have deemed him the best blade-smith in the world. | ![]() |
| Dan Thomsen – 25 years at Deerwood . Dan runs the wood-shop at camp and has also been seen leading quite a few hiking and canoeing trips. In the “off season”, he teaches spanish and coaches lacrosse at The Waynflete School, in Portland Maine. | ![]() |
| Cosby Hall – 23 years at Deerwood . Cosby spent many summers as the director of our Trips Program. Recently he moved into the office and transitioned seamlessly into the role of Head Counselor. Rumor has it he is the most accomplished “Len-Ball” player in Deerwood history. Cosby teaches and coaches at Norfolk Academy in Virginia . | ![]() |
| Brandi Watterson – 22 years at Deerwood . Brandi has worked as a chef side by side with Clarence for over two decades. She handles special dietary needs and is the dessert specialist -- a camper's birthday cake is never forgotten. Some also consider Brandi the unofficial camp psychologist, always willing to lend an ear, a laugh or some helpful advice! | ![]() |
| Ryan Carey – 20 years at Deerwood . “O.R.” is a certified paddling instructor and oversees both our canoeing and kayaking programs. He is also the driving force behind most of our 20 to 25 day trips each summer. Ryan teaches History at the Gilman School in Baltimore and leads their Outdoor Education program. | ![]() |
| Dan Ragsdale – 17 years at Deerwood . Rags brings his creative energy to a range of activities, including tennis and dramatics. Somehow he pulls together a group of campers at the end of each session to create a remarkable show - bringing out skills in campers that surprise even their parents. In the winter, Dan teaches at The Browing School in New York City. | |
Mike Gengras – 15 years at Deerwood . Mike is a versatile and multi-talented craftsman, equally comfortable leading the way in the wood-shop or forge. His mean harmonica rips entertain the entire camp community many times each summer. Mike teaches high school English and coaches lacrosse at North Yarmouth Academy in Maine . |

Andrew Bartlett – 9 years at Deerwood . Andrew returned to camp in '06 for the first time since being a camper in 1981. Andrew was involved in a number of waterfront activities, including kayaking, canoeing and waterskiing. Andrew currently teaches at Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, CT. |
